Plessey are looking for exceptional graduates to join our Engineering team at our high technology manufacturing site in Plymouth.

Plessey is an embedded technologies developer at the forefront of the microLED technology for augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) display applications.  Plessey announced the exciting news in March 2020 that we partnered with Meta to help achieve their vision of the next computing platform centred around people.

Plessey is an award-winning provider of full-field emissive microLED displays that combine very high intensity RGB pixel arrays with high-performance CMOS backplanes to produce very high-brightness, low power and high-frame-rate image sources for HMDs, AR and MR systems.

The Graduate Process Engineer will support the day-to-day engineering tasks, from process stability to recipe development within the process stages. This will involve the operation of the process tools and associated metrology equipment. The role involves taking responsibility of tool monitoring and product performance using Statistical Process Control, the development of new recipes and data collection and reporting to meet the capability, performance and yield of micro LED process.

During your training you will follow a plan covering process disciplines and will be mentored by your line manager while gaining the skills and knowledge you will require.  As well as your pure technical responsibilities, you will need great communication skills, as you will be interfacing with professionals from both inside and outside the company.

We offer a competitive salary plus additional employee benefits including private health insurance, pension scheme, life insurance, cycle to work scheme, an onsite subsidised gym and canteen and 28 days holiday plus bank holidays. To apply you will need:-

  • A wish for a long term career with us here in the beautiful South West, our location is adjacent to Dartmoor National Park.
  • A degree in Physics, Material Science or Chemistry

The position is based at our high-tech manufacturing site in Plymouth and will initially involve working Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:30, with an hour for lunch.  There may be a requirement to work some form of rotating shift pattern (shift premium payable) after completion of the training period.

Plessey is working with world leaders in consumer technology, who are paving the way with innovative next-generation Augmented Reality and wearable applications, based on advanced microLED display solutions.

Challenging existing display technologies, microLEDs are propelling forward a vast, yet stagnated market, changing the way we interact with our devices, both for information and entertainment.

Drawing on over a decade of semiconductor and optoelectronics expertise, Plessey has developed an award-winning, unique, and proprietary GaN-on-Silicon platform and monolithic process at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

Jacquiline, Principal Process Engineer

"Working with Plessey has opened many learning opportunities for me especially in R&D side of things. Most of my working experience has been with the manufacturing and product transfers. Here at Plessey, I get to be involved in the actual development of new technologies. Also, I am learning not just Lithography, but the whole process itself. It's been a great experience so far."

Ross, Device Engineer

"Working for Plessey allows me to continually deepen my understanding of phenomena and characterisation techniques that are not just specific to uLED displays, but apply to various applications within the semiconductor industry. With Plessey having a FAB on site, there are a large range of amicable colleagues within reach who specialise in fields across the process, starting from MOCVD specialists for GaN to experts in device testing and solid-state physics."
